Wind energy is the form of solar energy.Wind energy is describes the process by which wind is used to generate electric energy. Here Wind turbines convert kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical energy and generator convert mechanical power into electricity.
- China is the largest in wind energy of capacity 221GW.
- US is the second place with 96.4GW.
According to axis alignment, wind energy divided into two types.
- Horizontal axis wind turbine
- Vertical axis wind turbine
Horizontal axis turbine further divided into 3 types.
- Dutch type windmill
- Multiblade water pumping windmills
- High-speed propeller type windmills
Vertical axis wind turbines may be divided into two types.
- Savonius rotor
- Darrieus rotor
How does wind turbine work
When the wind passes over the blades and make them turn and produce kinetic energy. Then the blades turn a shaft within nacelle.
The shaft turns a generator which converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy. Then transformer situated bottom of the tower step up or the right voltage required for the local network and then these electricity exported to the electricity grid.
Various part of a wind turbine tower
Naccele-It is a cover housing that houses all the generating components in a wind turbine incuding gerator, gearbox drive drain and brake assembly.
Yaw system
Yaw system located between the wind turbine nacelle and tower. It's responsible is to orientation of wind turbine tower towards the wind.
Anemometer-It is a device used to measure the wind speed and direction.
Gear box:It connects the low speed shaft to high speed shaft and increase the rotational speed from about 30-60 rotation per minutes to about 1000-1800 rpm. This is the rotational speed required by most generator to produce electricity.
