​The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, or simply the Patna Zoo, is not just a sanctuary for animals but also a vast and beautiful botanical garden, making it a unique "biological park" that is one of the largest in the country.

​📜 History and Creation

  • ​Initial Establishment (1969): The park was first established as a Botanical Garden in 1969.

  • ​The Founder's Contribution: The foundation was laid on land provided by the then-Governor of Bihar, Shri Nityanand Kanungo, who donated approximately 34 acres from the Governor's House campus.

  • ​Official Opening as a Zoo (1973): Over the next few years, more land was acquired from various departments, and the park was officially opened to the public as a Biological Park (combining a zoo and botanical garden) in 1973.

  • ​The Name: It was later named the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in 1980.

​The park is spread over approximately 153 acres and is home to over 800 animals of around 110 species, alongside over 300 species of trees, herbs, and shrubs.
