The bond between nations is often measured by trade deals and defense pacts, but during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Malaysia, the spotlight shifted to something far more personal: shared affection for the Tamil language.

​Addressing the press alongside Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim, PM Modi emphasized that the vibrant presence of Tamil in Malaysia’s education, media, and cultural landscape acts as a living bridge between the two countries.

​In a move that delighted fans of South Indian cinema, PM Modi highlighted the "MGR connection." It turns out that Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim is a self-confessed "big fan" of the legendary Indian actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR).

​During a state lunch, the song ‘Naalai Namathe’ from MGR’s 1975 blockbuster was played, symbolizing the deep-rooted influence of Tamil cinema in Southeast Asia. This shared love for film has now been formalized with a new Audio-Visual Agreement, which aims to boost co-productions in film and music, particularly in the Tamil film industry.

​Preserving Heritage: The Thiruvalluvar Legacy

​To further strengthen these historical ties, the Prime Minister announced:

  • ​Thiruvalluvar Chair: Already established at the University of Malaya to promote Tamil literature.

  • ​Thiruvalluvar Centre: A new dedicated center to be set up in Malaysia to foster the shared heritage of the Indian diaspora.

​With nearly three million people of Indian descent living in Malaysia—the second largest such community in the world—the Indian diaspora remains the strongest pillar of this relationship. Most of this community is of Tamil origin, ensuring that the language remains a powerful tool for diplomacy.
